My recent work is a collection of small, brightly painted wooden shadowboxes displaying miniature shelves, counters, and cabinets filled with tiny sculptures of sweets. From cupcakes to chocolates to French pastries, these shadowboxes demonstrate an intersection between fine art and craft. While the boxes are created using simple materials commonly associated with craftwork, such as polymer clay and wood, the miniatures are far from simplistic in their detail. Layered with frosting, fruit slices, sprinkles, and other decorative features, the tiny foods become the focal point in each of their environments. Each box is like a shrine, celebrating these treats not only as tasty foods, but as art objects as well.
The scale change of the foods makes them adorable and covetable. Most people would not recognize ordinary chocolates and cakes as art objects; however, when reduced in size and placed in their tiny environment, the meanings of the objects change. They become precious collectables.
